About the show:
Before corporate-designed groups N'Sync, The Backstreet Boys and The Spice Girls... Before
American Idol and Popstars tried to use
television to create the next pop stars... The original pre-fab four, The Monkees appeared on
prime time 1960's television. The brain child of several forward-thinking producers who put ads
in a few hip, urban newspapers seeking four young men to be the basis of this Beatles-like music
group who would be featured in a weekly comedy TV show. But the show and the group quickly
outgrew their television origins, spawning multiple hit albums and tours that continue to this day.
Often derided for not originally playing their own music (though they did their own vocals),
The Monkees survived to become a beloved pop culture phenomenon (and they now play all their own
instruments).
Personal:
The WriterGroupie is a lifelong Monkees fan. In fact it is one of the first two television shows she
can recall choosing to watch from a very young age. She's had the pleasure of attending several
of the group's reunion concerts in the 80's and 90's and has met her two faves Davy and Micky on
more than one occasion. She counts The Monkees DVD sets as some of the favorites of any she owns
for their good extras (commentaries, trivia) and amazing packaging (each set resembles a portable
record player with each DVD wrapped in its own record-album-like sleeve).
