Miracles

About the show:

Although compared to The X-Files at the time it aired in 2003, Miracles was really the spiritual successor to Millennium in its quest to understand man's place in dark times. Miracles is the story of Paul Callan, a sensitive, spiritually aware young man, who was raised in a church orphanage and joined the seminary to become one of the church's leading investigators into seeming miracles. But after too many hoaxes or scientific explanations, when the church was unwilling to accept Paul's truly ghostly experience of being healed by a special young boy and then seeing the words 'God Is Now Here' formed in his own blood, Paul leaves the church to find his answers elsewhere. He is approached by Alva Keel, head of an investigative team called 'Sodalitos Quaerido', which studies paranormal phenomena. Paul joins Keel and his teammate Evelyn Santos, a single mom and former cop, as they uncover the strange and yes, miraculous. As Paul struggles to understand what he experiences through his faith, Alva struggles to find secular meanings in their experiences to keep within his own comfort zone.

Personal:

The WriterGroupie heard about this show through the Buffy grapevine. This was the show that Angel showrunner David Greenwalt had left Joss Whedon's universe for. It was shocking to Angel fans, but intrigued the WriterGroupie who also loved the ideas and genres this show was supposed to touch on: faith, mystery, God, darkness, biblical themes. But the WriterGroupie knew that a show this challenging would never last one season. So she taped the half dozen episodes that sporadically aired (when they weren't being constantly pre-empted) and was sad, but not surprised when it was cancelled.

She was however, delighted to learn of the DVD release of the series which contained not only the six aired episodes, but the seven that didn't air in the U.S. along with deleted scenes and SIX commentaries by the show's co-creator, Richard Hatem! What a wealth of goodies! Now that's the way to put out a TV DVD set! The WriterGroupie admits that she is VERY frugal when it comes to buying TV series on DVD. Prior to this series, she had ONLY purchased shows that she knew very well, with strong repeat viewing potential. But there was something about Miracles that fascinated her from the start and she took a chance on buying this series, having only seen half the episodes previously. And was very glad she did. Miracles is an inspiring series with characters the WriterGroupie has become passionate about once again. With so many shows being axed too soon, the WriterGroupie becomes more and more hesitant to invest her heart. But when its stolen away, like it was with Miracles, the only thing she can do is follow along.
