About the show: A high school cheerleader who kills vampires? Sounds crazy, no? How could that premise (based on an only moderately successful film from five years earlier) possibly support a TV series that anyone would take seriously? Much less garner one of the very few Emmy writing nominations for a genre television show? One answer: creator Joss Whedon, the brains, heart and courage behind this amazing series. A small cult hit that grew to be respected by fans and critics alike, Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a poignant, funny tale of a small group of high school kids, the bonds of friendship and the basic daily struggle of good vs. evil. It told small tales and large, of love and loss, kindness, loyalty and faith. From its intrepid first season illustrating the horrors of high school, through its brilliant, powerful morality tales of the second and third seasons, to the fourth where creator Whedon took a risk with the silent episode "Hush", to the daring fifth season introduction of little sister, Dawn, through the network switch from the WB to UPN and the ensuing darkness of the floundering sixth season with its highlight musical episode "Once More With Feeling", to its triumphant rebirth in its seventh season, Buffy the Vampire Slayer will always reign as not only one of the greatest genre series, but as one of the greatest television series in history. Whedon's Buffyverse has expanded since its original inception, spinning off series Angel,
various comic books and novels, and Whedon still has various other plans in mind, including an
animated series, and a potential British miniseries called Ripper, focusing on the
character of Giles. Future spinoff series are also likely.
The WriterGroupie has had the tremendous pleasure of meeting various people in the Buffyverse,
including Joss Whedon, Alyson Hannigan, Nicholas Brendon,
James Marsters, Seth Green, and Armin Shimerman.
One of her fondest memories was of attending a
Behind the Scenes of Buffy the Vampire Slayer panel with some of the cast and crew.
