About the movie:
Please note: This is an R-rated film for language, adult sexual situations and nudity and may not
be appropriate for younger viewers.
A nostalgic fictionalized version of the 1970's glitter rock days of Bowie and bisexuality, this
movie takes a dark but loving look at those times post-hippie, but pre-disco where free love had
turned to questions of gender-bending and sexual preferences; when boys were always prettier
than the girls and their parents were frightened by it.
Velvet Goldmine is the story of one over the top glitter-rock star (loosely based on David
Bowie and his pals), his rise and downfall and his effect on the culture and the audience as
personified by one former fan-turned reporter seeking to find out what ever happened to the
former star.
This beautifully designed film features an extraordinary cast including Jonathan Rhys-Meyers
(Elvis, in the forthcoming TV miniseries), Ewan McGregor (Obi-Wan of Star Wars prequels),
Christian Bale (Batman, in Batman Begins), and Toni Collette (Sixth Sense,
Muriel's Wedding). The film deserves incredible praise for its period-emulating soundtrack,
its art design, makeup, hair and costumes which utterly capture the flavor and flair of the period.
Personal:
The WriterGroupie is a huge fan of this entire cast and just adores this film in its sadness,
madness, and finally, hope. Christian Bale is the ultimate groupie who finally gets his moment
with one of his idols and hopefully, learns from it. Tragic, triumphant and sadly realistic in
its human interactions, Velvet Goldmine is a very adult coming of age story.
