About the movie:
1939 may have been the year of Gone With the Wind and The Wizard of Oz, but it was
also the year of this lesser-known gem of an animated film, the Fleischer Brothers' Gulliver's
Travels.
One of the earliest full-length animated films, Gulliver's Travels boasts a catchy
soundtrack, and animation by the creators of the classic cartoon characters Betty Boop and Popeye.
The animation is charming, though it may seem dated to the modern audience. The story tells how
the stranded sailor, Lemuel Gulliver, finds himself on an island filled with tiny people and how
he affects their lives. Various subplots include a pair of young star-crossed lovers that Gulliver
must help reunite along with foiling a plot against his own life. It's a simple, innocent version
of the tale, that can still be enjoyed by all ages, though it definitely feels like a period piece
that had it been a live-action film could have starred Bing Crosby as Gulliver and Roland Young as
King Little.
Personal:
This has been a favorite film of the WriterGroupie's since her early childhood. Watching it again
recently, she found the songs and the story to have the same appeal as ever. A delight.
