About the movie:
Maybe it's not as well remembered as the John Hughes films of the era, but what "Girls Just Want
To Have Fun" lacks in fame, it makes up for in heart. And cheese. Okay, the costumes and the
choreography are pure 80's, but the story is timeless. Girl from repressed family (Sarah Jessica
Parker) and boy from the wrong side of the tracks (Lee Montgomery) just want to take part in the
Dance TV contest for the chance to dance on the show. Opposing them are their parents, who want
more for their kids than dancing, and Natalie, the spoiled rich girl who also wants to win the
contest. Helping them out are best friends Lynne (Helen Hunt) and Drew (Jonathan Silverman) and
little sister Maggie (Shannen Doherty). Will true love and rock 'n' roll conquer all? Hey, it's
a musical!
Personal:
The WriterGroupie is a sucker for a dance movie and a sucker for cheesy teen movies of all decades,
but especially the 80's. She loves the soundtrack which culminates in the 80's classic: "Dancing
In Heaven" by Q-Feel.
While the WriterGroupie must acknowledge that despite being a big fan of Sarah Jessica Parker's
since her Square Pegs days, the young Helen Hunt steals every scene she's in. Though
at the time she first saw the film the WriterGroupie was especially appreciative of Joey
Lawrence-lookalike Lee Montgomery.
But her special connection to this film happened right after it first came out. The WriterGroupie,
still in school at the time, had seen the film and loved it. One afternoon her school was playing
another school at volleyball? softball? basketball? -- the WriterGroupie went to a small school
where everyone was on every sports team. At any rate, she was quite surprised to recognize one
of the girls on the opposing team as the girl who'd played the younger sister in "Girls Just Want
To Have Fun". As soon as she had the chance, she approached the girl, who she found to be very
sweet and appreciative of having been recognized from the film, which she'd enjoyed making. The
WriterGroupie remembers thinking the girl was so nice and she hoped she'd continue to be a successful
actress. That girl of course, was Shannen Doherty, later of Beverly Hills 90210 and
Charmed.
