About the movie:
Coleman Ettinger (played by Jason Robards) is the grumpy old man whose yard the local teens,
including Corey Feldman's Bobby Keller, constantly tramp through on their way to school. In his
spare time, when not yelling at the kids or quoting literary references, Coleman practices tai chi,
meditation and is trying to figure out how to use his dreams to extend his life with his wife, Gena's,
forever. Unfortunately, the phrase 'be careful what you wish for' proves all too true, and instead
of extending his own life, after a strange accident, Coleman finds his own consciousness trapped in
the body of... Bobby Keller! And his lovely wife Gena seems trapped somewhere within the consciousness
of the lovely young lady who Bobby's had a crush on: Lainie Diamond (played by Meredith Salenger).
Trouble ensues when Coleman, in a dream state, learns that Bobby does not want to switch bodies back
until Coleman can fix his loser life! Will Coleman and Gena ever get back where they belong? And
will Bobby and Lainie wind up together afterward?
With the retiring of the brat pack from the 1980's teen movie scene, someone had to take over.
In this case it was the two-Corey tag team of Feldman and Haim. Unlike the majority of their
pairings which featured Haim as the lead and Feldman as the best buddy, the reversed formula
has Feldman playing the romantic lead, with Haim in the smaller role as the wacky best friend.
Personal:
The WriterGroupie still finds this film charming and appealing in its mix of mysticism and teen
romance. Jason Robards is a particular joy in his role of the misguided, but feisty Coleman.
She also loved the eclectic soundtrack including mixes of the title song, Michael Damian's
hit song "Rock On", and R.E.M.'s "It's the End of the World As We Know It (and I Feel Fine)".
