Celebrating the Writer

David Bowie

About the actor:

Though better known for his musical career, David Bowie is a fascinating performer who started gaining notice for his movie roles in the 1970's. Some of his best performances include the alien in The Man Who Fell To Earth, the aging vampire in The Hunger and (the ActorGroupie's personal favorite) the Goblin King in Labyrinth.

His birthday is January 8.

Trivia: He was born David Jones, but changed his name so as not to be confused with Davy Jones of The Monkees.

Personal:

The WriterGroupie had the extreme pleasure of seeing David Bowie perform live at a taping of The Tonight Show. The other guest on that show was Keanu Reeves and the WriterGroupie's favorite moment of the episode was watching Reeves rock out (off-camera) to Bowie's performance. After the taping, the WriterGroupie and several other fans found their way around to the back of the studio and waited for Bowie to make his exit. And waited. It turned out while Keanu Reeves snuck out through another exit, Bowie stayed for an extra hour taping some musical material for a video or show or somesuch.

But the WriterGroupie was determined to meet Bowie. She had seen a Q&A with him once where he was asked what was his favorite gift to receive from fans. He had said that he loved it when fans gave him a copy of their favorite book -- that was very special to him. Hoping to meet the man, the WriterGroupie had gone through her bookshelves and picked out a particularly nice copy of Ray Bradbury's "The Martian Chronicles" to give to 'The Man Who Fell To Earth'.

Eventually, he finished filming the extra material and started down the long hallway toward the WriterGroupie and other fans who'd waited. As the WriterGroupie watched Bowie and his entourage (including the beautiful Iman) approach, the other fans ran toward him holding out CD's and posters for him to sign.

The WriterGroupie waited for the crowd to disperse and gathered her courage as he approached. Bowie and the entourage were about to pass the WriterGroupie and enter the limo that had driven up. The WriterGroupie found her voice and said, "David?" He slowed from the entourage as the book was held out to him. He paused as if unsure if he was being asked to sign something. But the ActorGroupie wanted to give, not receive. She said she'd seen the interview where he said he liked receiving favorite books from fans, so she'd brought this for him. He smiled at her, accepted the book and looked down at it. "Martian Chronicles!" he exclaimed. "Thank you, love." And then David Bowie leaned over and kissed the WriterGroupie on the cheek. As she turned beet-red and had a Marcia Brady moment (hand clasped to her cheek where she'd been kissed vowing never to wash the cheek again), she watched as he and Iman got into the limo and he happily flipped through the book, showing it off to Iman. She may not have gotten an autograph like the other fans, but the WriterGroupie had one of the best moments of her life!
